Lagos Marina Shoreline Protection Project Hits 30% Completion, Set to Safeguard Assets for 25 Years

FG Shoreline Protection Project at Lagos Marina Reaches 30% Completion, Expected to Last 25 Years

The Federal Government’s shoreline protection project at Marina in Lagos State has achieved 30% completion, with expectations to safeguard critical infrastructure for the next 25 years.

Project Progress and Key Objectives

Mrs Olukorede Kesha, Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, confirmed the development during an inspection visit on Monday. According to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the project aims to protect the Outer Marina Road and Lagos Blue Line Rail from environmental threats.

“The permanent work completion stands at about 30%, with 70% remaining,” Kesha stated. “Our work extends the road’s lifespan by over 25 years, ensuring protection for Lagos State’s Blue Line Rail investment.”

Quality Assurance and Engineering Approach

Kesha emphasized the project’s high standards, detailing an innovative reinforcement strategy combining new concrete sheet piles with existing metal structures for enhanced shoreline resilience.

“The quality here is uncompromised,” she affirmed. “We’re installing concrete sheet piles behind the failing metal ones and connecting both systems for maximum protection.”

Legislative Endorsement and Strategic Importance

The House of Representatives Committee on Works joined the inspection, expressing satisfaction with project execution. Committee Chairman Akin Alabi described the initiative as vital for preventing infrastructure loss.

“Previous maintenance gaps necessitated this intervention,” Alabi explained. “Without action, we risked losing valuable coastal assets.”

The committee praised Works Minister David Umahi for prioritizing the project and commended Kesha’s leadership in maintaining quality standards.

Key Project Details

  • In March 2025, FEC approved a contract increase from N144 billion to N176 billion to include additional critical infrastructure
  • The project protects military installations, police facilities, and Lagos rail infrastructure
  • Contractor Build Well continues implementation to mitigate erosion threats

The shoreline protection forms part of broader federal efforts to secure Lagos’ coastal infrastructure against rising sea levels and erosion.
