Liberia’s Press Union President Urges President Boakai to Uphold Rule of Law
Call for Legal Accountability in Governance
Monrovia — Julius Kanubah, President of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), has urged President Joseph Boakai to prioritize the rule of law as a fundamental pillar of his administration. Speaking at the first-ever Presidential Media Dinner hosted by President Boakai at the EJS Ministerial Complex in Congo Town, Kanubah emphasized the importance of legal accountability in governance.
Kanubah’s Key Message
“If there is anything your government must not compromise, it is the issue of the rule of law,” Kanubah stated. “Respect for and adherence to the rule of law is critical to maintaining peace and fostering national development. Let’s use the rule of law to fight corruption.”
Challenges Facing Liberia’s Media
The PUL president also outlined pressing issues affecting Liberia’s media sector, including:
- Declining advertising revenues
- Government debts to media institutions
- Reduced donor support, particularly from USAID, impacting media training and capacity
Political Interference in Community Radio
Kanubah raised concerns over political influence in community radio stations, urging the Boakai administration to protect local broadcasters from undue pressure by county officials.
Reforming State Media
He also called for transforming the state-run Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS) into a true public service broadcaster, free from political bias.
Commendation for Media Engagement
Despite these challenges, Kanubah praised President Boakai for engaging with the media and encouraged stronger collaboration between the government and press to strengthen democracy and freedom of expression.
A Call to Action
Echoing President Boakai’s own words, Kanubah concluded: “It is time: We think the media. Love the media. And build the media.”
