Malian Political Parties Warn Against Dissolution, Demand Constitutional Respect

Malian Political Parties Warn Against Dissolution Threat, Call for Constitutional Respect

Political Class Takes Stand Amid Growing Concerns

Facing increasing threats of potential dissolution, Mali’s political parties have taken decisive action. On April 26, 2025, representatives from the Initiative of Parties for the Rereading of the Charter (IPAC) and the Forum of Political Parties and Movements (FPMP) held a press briefing at the Press House in Bamako to address growing concerns.

Parties Challenge Government’s Consultation Process

During the briefing, political leaders criticized the ongoing review process of the political parties charter. They argued that the Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister, responsible for Political Reforms and Electoral Process Support, should prioritize discussions with the political class rather than conducting nationwide consultations.

“The Minister Delegate has ignored our repeated requests for dialogue, opting instead for what we consider mock consultations,” the parties stated in their declaration.

Legitimacy Concerns Raised

The political parties questioned the legitimacy of the current consultation process, noting that the 1,500 participants in the active forces consultations pale in comparison to the 76,000 Malians who participated in the National Refoundation Conference (ANR) and over 3 million voters in the 2023 Constitutional Referendum.

They issued a stark warning: “Violating the Constitution, Transition Charter, and political parties charter would have serious reversible consequences for our nation, especially when we remember that 300 deaths led to our multiparty system.”

Planned Actions and Mobilization

Determined to prevent potential dissolution measures, the parties announced plans to engage with Mali’s moral, associative, and trade union authorities, whom they will “take as witnesses before Malians and before history.”

The political groups called for activist mobilization while awaiting the conclusions of the national consultation phase, after which they will establish a concrete action plan.

Commitment to Democracy

The parties reaffirmed their dedication to Mali’s democratic principles: “We reiterate our support for freedoms and democracy in Mali. We will remain committed and available to work in the best interest of all Malians.”

Decision Point Approaches

With the national consultation phase running from April 28-29, 2025, the political parties’ next steps will depend on the government’s final decisions regarding the potential dissolution of political organizations.
