Martha Opoku Agyemang: A Beacon of Hope for Children with Special Needs in Ghana
Transforming Personal Struggle into National Impact
At 56, Martha Opoku Agyemang has emerged as one of Ghana’s most inspiring advocates for children with special needs. As a top 10 finalist in MTN Heroes of Change Season 7, her work through the KSPC Foundation (Kids and Single Parents Care Foundation) has gained national recognition for supporting children with cerebral palsy and other disabilities.
A Mother’s Journey Becomes a National Movement
Martha’s motivation stems from her personal experience as a mother to a child with cerebral palsy. “I understood the isolation, the fear, the exhaustion—and the fierce love,” she shares. “That’s what drove me to build a community where no parent has to walk that path alone.”
The Evolution of KSPC Foundation
Founded in 2002, the foundation began with radio advocacy on Adom FM, reaching families who lacked access to critical information. After establishing a dedicated facility in Kumasi, Martha expanded services to include:
- Therapy and rehabilitation programs
- Medical support services
- A daycare center enabling parents to work
Current Impact and Future Vision
Today, the foundation supports 32 children—14 residential and 18 receiving regular therapy—plus four street children placed by the Department of Social Welfare. Beyond direct care, Martha focuses on:
- Community education to reduce stigma
- Parent training programs
- Policy advocacy for special needs children
Recognition and Future Goals
As a Health category finalist, Martha could win GHS 100,000 to expand her work. Supporters describe her as “a strong, selfless woman” whose dedication inspires action. One nominator stated: “She deserves not just praise, but tangible support.”
Her story demonstrates how personal experience, when combined with determination, can create systemic change—transforming Ghana’s approach to disability one family at a time.
