Kimberley Le Court Makes History as First African Rider to Win Tour de France Femmes Stage

Mauritian Cyclist Claims Yellow Jersey in Stunning Performance

Kimberley Le Court De Billot-Pienaar, the leader of AG Insurance-Soudal team, has made cycling history by becoming the first African-born rider to win a stage in the Tour de France Femmes. The 29-year-old Mauritian reclaimed the yellow jersey on Wednesday after an impressive performance that saw her overtake Dutch cycling legend Marianne Vos in the final stretch.

“This is truly a dream start to the Tour. Winning the stage, wearing yellow – I couldn’t even imagine this when we started in Brittany,” an elated Le Court told reporters after her victory. “For what comes next, we’ll see. I don’t know my limits in the mountains yet, as this is my first major stage race where my team has asked me to compete for the general classification.”

From Mountain Biking to Road Racing Stardom

The former mountain biker, who only transitioned fully to road racing two years ago, has emerged as the revelation of this year’s Tour. Her victory at Liège-Bastogne-Liège earlier this spring signaled her growing dominance, and she now positions herself as a serious podium contender for Sunday’s final stage in Châtel, in the French Alps.

Stephen Delcourt, manager of rival team FDJ-Suez, acknowledged Le Court’s remarkable performance: “She’s truly impressive, on par with (defending champion) Katarzyna Niewiadoma.” Delcourt’s own team leader, Demi Vollering, finished second in Guéret and remains many experts’ favorite for overall victory despite a serious crash two days earlier.

Tour de France Femmes 2025 Heats Up

As the 2025 Tour de France Femmes enters its decisive mountain stages, the competition promises thrilling battles between the established stars and emerging talents like Le Court. The Mauritian rider’s historic achievement not only marks a personal milestone but also represents a significant moment for African cycling on the world stage.

With the mountainous terrain of the Alps awaiting in the final days, all eyes will be on whether Le Court can maintain her yellow jersey against the world’s best climbers, including Vollering who is considered the strongest ascender in women’s cycling.
