Malawi Congress Party Leader Condemns Political Violence Ahead of Elections

Chimwendo Banda Calls for Peaceful Campaigns in Dowa Rally

Dowa, Malawi – Richard Chimwendo Banda, Secretary General of the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP), has strongly denounced political violence and harassment during campaign periods. Speaking at a major rally in his Dowa East constituency, the senior politician emphasized the need to respect fundamental freedoms as Malawi prepares for September 16 elections.

Appeal for Peaceful Elections

Addressing supporters at Nalunga ground under Senior Traditional Authority Chiwere, Chimwendo Banda warned that political violence undermines civil rights and causes human suffering. “Violence manifests in various forms – from voter disenfranchisement to physical and sexual violence, particularly affecting vulnerable groups like women,” stated the Local Government Minister.

The MCP leader made a passionate appeal: “I urge all party members and peace-loving Malawians to immediately stop hostile actions. We must work together to create favorable conditions for credible, inclusive elections. Let’s reject disinformation, hate speech, and incitement to violence.”

Economic Recovery Underway

Turning to national development, Chimwendo Banda highlighted President Lazarus Chakwera’s economic recovery plan. “Our economic stability journey has begun under President Chakwera’s leadership. Despite past challenges, we’re now seeing signs of progress and a promising future,” said the Dowa East MP.

Agriculture Minister Sam Kawale, the event’s Guest of Honor, praised Chakwera’s economic vision, citing the K220 million allocation to the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and agricultural loans for women and youth through NEEF as key achievements.

High-Profile Attendance

The rally attracted numerous MCP officials, including Baba Malondera and several Members of Parliament, demonstrating the party’s strong presence in the region ahead of crucial elections.
