Violent Clash in Gorongosa Leaves Dozens Injured
In the latest incident, riot police (UIR) opened fire on a delegation from the opposition MDM party in Gorongosa, Sofala province yesterday. According to reports from broadcaster DW, at least 24 people were injured when police used live ammunition and tear gas against demonstrators who were marching toward official ceremonies marking the town’s 60th anniversary.
The confrontation occurred after demonstrators failed to comply with police orders to halt their procession from the MDM district office. This violent response marks another troubling episode in Mozambique’s ongoing political tensions.
