Murder suspect confesses as community consults local deity
The suspect, Yusif

The quiet township of Nkrankwanta in the Dormaa West District of Ghana’s Bono Region was thrown into shock when a Fulani herdsman confessed to murdering a local mobile phone vendor.

The Tragic Incident

According to reports from the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the victim, Japhet Yeboah, was shot dead at his mobile vending shop on February 18, 2025. The community had since buried the deceased before the shocking confession emerged.

The Unexpected Confession

The suspect, identified only as Yusif, was a well-known Fulani cattle seller in the area. In a surprising turn of events, he reportedly approached community elders and confessed to the crime.

Traditional Justice Prevails

Mr. Issifu Basoma, Assembly Member for the Asuopiri Electoral Area, confirmed to GNA that the confession came after community leaders consulted the local shrine to help identify the perpetrator.

“As required by our traditions,” Basoma explained, “the people performed rituals and poured libation to invoke the deity’s power. Shortly after, the suspect came forward and confessed.”

Evidence Recovered

The suspect reportedly led elders to a location where they recovered:

  • The pistol allegedly used in the crime
  • Other sharp objects connected to the case

Police Investigation Ongoing

A source at the Nkrankwanta Police Station confirmed Yusif is in custody and assisting with investigations. Authorities continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the shocking murder and subsequent confession.

This case highlights the unique intersection of modern law enforcement and traditional justice systems in some Ghanaian communities.
