MURIC Describes Gov. Adeleke’s Prayer Video as Laughable
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), an Islamic human rights organization, has strongly condemned a viral video clip showing Governor Ademola Jackson Adeleke of Osun State participating in a Muslim prayer session at the Eid ground in Oshogbo.
The group described the video as “laughable, despicable, and detestable” during a statement by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Monday, 31st March, 2025. Prof. Akintola expressed deep disappointment with Governor Adeleke’s actions, stating that it amounts to executive pretense.
Reactions and Criticisms
Regarding the video, MURIC criticized Governor Adeleke’s attempt to join Muslims in prayer, highlighting that it is unnecessary for non-Muslim leaders to participate directly in Islamic worship.
“It is enough to show solidarity around the mosque premises, but they should not join us because they do not worship Allah in whom they have no faith,” Akintola emphasized.
Call for Dignity and Fair Representation
Professor Akintola noted that the governors of Lagos and Ogun States, who are Christians, maintain their dignity by respecting Islamic programs without pretending to join Muslim prayers.
He advised Governor Adeleke to emulate this approach and focus on achieving fair and equitable representation for Muslims in Osun State rather than attempting to engage in Muslim worship.
Public Reactions
The video sparked mixed reactions from the public, with many social media users expressing amusement and confusion over Governor Adeleke’s actions. Some Facebook users questioned the intention behind his participation, comparing it unfavorably to the approach of other state governors who maintain religious boundaries.
MURIC’s headquarters received numerous calls and comments criticizing the video, reflecting the strong feelings of disappointment among many Muslim Nigerians. The organization stressed that such actions by leaders could potentially fuel misunderstandings and conflict in a multicultural society.
