NDP NEC Authorizes Leadership to Pursue Political Alliances for 2025 Elections

NDP NEC Grants Leadership Authority to Pursue Political Alliances Ahead of 2025 Elections

Malawi’s National Development Party Moves Forward with Coalition Negotiations

MZUZU, Malawi – The National Development Party (NDP) has taken a significant step toward potential political alliances ahead of Malawi’s 2025 general elections. The party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) met on Saturday and unanimously authorized its leadership to begin negotiations with like-minded political groups.

Official Mandate for Coalition Talks

In an official communique signed by Secretary General Wakuda Kamanga, the NEC granted explicit authority to party leaders to immediately engage in political negotiations. The document states this mandate includes “the freedom to initiate, lead and participate in discussions aimed at establishing strategic political alliances, coalitions, or partnerships.”

The decision reflects NDP’s commitment to strengthening its role in national politics and advancing democratic governance. Party officials emphasized that any potential partners must share NDP’s core values and vision for Malawi.

Guidelines for Negotiations

The NEC established clear guidelines for the negotiation process, requiring leadership to:

  • Maintain party integrity, transparency, and accountability
  • Provide regular updates to the NEC on progress
  • Submit any final agreements for NEC ratification before execution

President Mwenifumbo’s Position

The move follows recent comments by NDP President Frank Mwenifumbo, who had hinted at convening the NEC meeting in response to growing public interest in political coalitions. Mwenifumbo previously stated, “On electoral alliances we shall follow the resolutions of the NEC,” indicating the party’s commitment to collective decision-making.

Political analysts suggest this development could significantly impact Malawi’s political landscape as parties position themselves for the September 2025 elections. The NDP’s decision to explore alliances follows similar moves by other Malawian political parties in recent months.
