Nigeria Records Zero Piracy Cases in Five Years, Naval Chief Announces

Naval Chief Credits Enhanced Security Operations for Safe Waterways

Nigeria has achieved a significant milestone in maritime security, with no reported cases of piracy in its waterways over the past five years, according to Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, the Chief of Naval Staff. The announcement was made during the passing-out parade of young sailors at the Nigerian Navy School in Ikot Ntuen, Akwa Ibom State.

Represented by Rear Admiral Gabriel Aligwe, Chief of Administration at the Nigerian Navy School, Ogalla attributed this success to rigorous security operations, including Operation Delta Sanity, continuous patrols, and advanced surveillance systems. “We have NNS ships at sea at all times to ensure safety,” he emphasized.

Graduating Sailors Urged to Uphold Discipline

The naval chief also addressed the graduating class, encouraging them to remain resilient and committed to their military careers. “The training they received provides a solid foundation for a bright future,” Ogalla stated. Many of the graduates are expected to join the Nigerian Defence Academy or continue serving in the Nigerian Navy.

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, represented by Education Commissioner Ubong Umoh, commended the young sailors for their academic and military achievements. He urged them to avoid negative behaviors that could jeopardize their future. “You have been well-groomed—stay focused and shun vices,” Umoh advised.

What This Means for Nigeria’s Maritime Security

The absence of piracy incidents highlights the effectiveness of Nigeria’s naval operations in safeguarding its territorial waters. This achievement not only boosts investor confidence but also strengthens regional trade routes. With sustained efforts, Nigeria aims to maintain its status as a piracy-free zone in the Gulf of Guinea.
