Nigeria to Spend N73.9 Billion on Maraba-Keffi Road Reconstruction
Federal Government Sets 13-Month Deadline for Project Completion
The Federal Government has approved a budget of N73.9 billion for the reconstruction and expansion of the Maraba-Keffi road project, with completion targeted for June 2026. The project, awarded to China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) Nigeria Limited, is part of ongoing infrastructure upgrades across key transport corridors.
Minister Inspects Progress, Commends Presidential Support
Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, confirmed the development during an inspection of the Abuja-Keffi expressway expansion on Saturday. He praised President Bola Tinubu for prioritizing the project, which aims to alleviate transportation challenges in the region.
“This road is critical as it connects multiple states,” Goronyo stated. “We’ve completed the Keffi-Makurdi section, while work continues on Mararaba-Keffi and Makurdi-Enugu stretches. By June 2026, we expect full completion from Abuja to Port Harcourt.”
Project Progress and Economic Impact
The minister reported 42% completion since work began in December 2023, with the contract originally awarded in June 2023 for a 30-month duration. He emphasized the project’s economic benefits, including reduced travel time and improved goods movement.
Goronyo added: “We’re awaiting contractor certification to release additional funds. The ministry is also exploring lane expansion options to maximize benefits for commuters.”
Contractor Addresses Implementation Challenges
Ronald Liao, CHEC Commercial Manager, projected 56% completion by month-end but cited heavy daytime traffic between Masaka and Mararaba as a major constraint.
“We’ve resorted to night operations to maintain progress,” Liao explained. “With support from the Works Ministry and FRSC, we remain committed to delivering within schedule.”
