Defence Headquarters Addresses Regional Security Concerns
The Defence Headquarters has firmly denied reports suggesting Niger Republic’s withdrawal from the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), warning that such a move would have severe security consequences for the region.
Maj.-Gen. Markus Kangye, Director of Defence Media Operations, clarified the situation during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, highlighting the MNJTF’s vital role in maintaining regional stability.
Critical Importance of Regional Cooperation
“The Multinational Joint Task Force was established by Lake Chad Commission countries to combat shared security threats,” Kangye explained. “Nigeria has invested significantly in ensuring the task force’s continued operation.”
The military official emphasized the potential repercussions if any member state withdraws: “The synergy we depend on would be compromised. It’s not in our interest for any country to leave, as their security challenges directly impact us.”
Ongoing Counterterrorism Operations
Kangye also addressed concerns about military operations, confirming that counterterrorism efforts remain active. “We continue to pursue high-value targets, including notorious terrorist leader Bello Turji,” he stated.
The Director reassured the public about troop welfare, detailing measures to support injured personnel: “Wounded soldiers receive comprehensive care, including housing for those unable to return to duty and advanced medical treatment abroad when necessary.”
