Northern Democrats Plan New Political Party Ahead of 2027 Elections
LND Seeks to Reshape Nigeria’s Political Landscape
The League of Northern Democrats (LND), a prominent political pressure group, has announced plans to explore forming a new political party ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. This move aims to reshape the country’s political dynamics and address growing dissatisfaction with existing parties.
Key Decisions from Abuja Meeting
During a high-level meeting at Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja on May 22, 2025, chaired by former Kano State Governor Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, the group made several critical resolutions:
- Endorsed the LND constitution and previous meeting minutes
- Approved registration as a formal association
- Established a new leadership structure
Strategic Political Moves
The LND resolved to support the National Opposition Coalition Group led by former Senate President David Mark, while also pursuing its preferred option of forming a new party. The group remains open to merging with existing parties if necessary.
To strengthen its influence, the LND plans to coordinate a northern stakeholders’ summit, building on earlier agreements from the Arewa Consultative Forum meeting in Kaduna.
Constitutional Stand and Governance Criticism
The group strongly opposed lawmakers from Delta and Kebbi States retaining legislative seats after defecting from their original parties. The LND threatened civil resistance unless the National Assembly declares these seats vacant.
In a signed communiqué, the LND criticized northern governors for failing to address worsening poverty, insecurity, and economic decline in the region.
Commitment to Reform
The meeting concluded with reaffirmed commitments to political reform, constitutional accountability, and improved governance across Northern Nigeria.
