NPA Denies Corruption Claims, Asserts Compliance with Regulations

NPA Dismisses Multi-Billion-Naira Corruption Allegations as False

Authority Denounces Claims as Mischief-Making

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has strongly denied allegations of multi-billion-naira corruption within the organization, labeling them as false and fabricated by mischief makers.

Budget Oversight and Procurement Processes Defended

Ikechukwu Onyemekara, General Manager of Corporate and Strategic Communication at NPA, clarified in a statement that the authority’s budget and expenditures undergo strict supervision from multiple government bodies. These include the Ministry of Marine & Blue Economy, the Budget Office of the Federation, and the National Assembly, making any misapplication of funds impossible.

Warri Escravos Channel Dredging Explained

Onyemekara explained that the dredging contract for the Warri Escravos Channel – a critical hub for Nigeria’s oil and gas operations – was necessary to address increasing siltation. The project followed emergency procurement procedures under the Procurement Act 2007 to prevent potential international embarrassment and significant investment losses from vessels running aground.

Marine Craft Procurement Justified

“The procurement of marine crafts like tugboats and pilot cutters complied fully with the Procurement Act 2007,” Onyemekara stated. “This equipment was essential for national energy security, particularly for crude oil sales in naira to domestic refiners requiring intensive offshore operations.”

Other Allegations Addressed

The NPA spokesperson also refuted claims about withheld documents, stating civil service guidelines make such delays impossible. Regarding expenditures at the London office, Onyemekara declared: “The alleged transactions never occurred – these claims are completely false.”
