Nigeria’s Security Progress Under Tinubu Administration: NSA Ribadu Highlights Key Achievements
Substantial Reduction in Security Threats
The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, has announced that the Federal Government and security agencies have made significant progress in addressing the multi-faceted security challenges inherited by President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Speaking at the APC National Summit marking two years of the Tinubu government, Ribadu emphasized that coordinated security efforts have successfully contained atrocities such as mass killings, destruction, abductions, and terrorist attacks on government facilities.
Inherited Security Crises
Ribadu outlined five major security crises the administration faced upon taking office in May 2023:
- Boko Haram insurgency in the North East
- Armed banditry in the North West
- Secessionist agitations by IPOB/ESN in the South East
- Niger Delta unrest
- Communal conflicts and herder-farmer clashes, particularly in the North Central region
Notable Security Achievements
The NSA reported impressive results from security operations:
- 13,543 Boko Haram elements neutralized
- Over 11,000 weapons recovered and destroyed
- 124,408 Boko Haram fighters and family members surrendered
- Significant reduction in sit-at-home orders in the South East
- Decreased sabotage of oil installations in the Niger Delta
Ongoing Operations and Political Support
While acknowledging some setbacks, Ribadu confirmed continued operations in strategic locations like the Tumbuktu Triangle and Tumbu islands to eliminate remaining insurgents. Senate President Godswill Akpabio praised the administration’s security efforts, noting the disappearance of terrorist-controlled territories and alien flags. Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, representing 22 APC governors, expressed confidence in the administration’s security progress despite ongoing challenges.
