Raila Odinga Calls for Peace as ODM Prepares for Grassroots Elections

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has urged party delegates to maintain peace and decorum during the upcoming grassroots elections scheduled to begin on Monday, April 7, 2025.
The former Prime Minister made these remarks during an Eid Baraza event in Mombasa on Saturday, April 5, emphasizing the need for a smooth electoral process.
ODM Grassroots Elections Approach
The party, popularly known as Chungwa, is preparing for nationwide elections that will be conducted through consensus or show of hands across all 47 counties. These elections mark a crucial step in ODM’s internal democratic process.
“When you conduct the party’s elections, I want them to be friendly and peaceful because this is your party. Do not shove your brother or fight anybody. We are all brothers, and whoever gets elected is your brother and a member of our party,” Raila stated.
Election Preparations in High Gear
The party’s National Elections Coordinating Committee (NECC) has confirmed that preparations are complete for the exercise. Committee chairperson Emily Awita expressed confidence in a smooth process:
“We are very ready for the exercise. It is all systems go and we expect the exercise to run smoothly,” Awita said in a statement. “We have appointed and posted Returning Officers to all the 290 constituencies as well as Presiding Officers to all the Wards.”

Election Structure and Process
The elections will follow a structured approach:
- Ward Level: Elections begin Monday, April 7 at the sub-branch level
- Constituency Level: Elections scheduled for Wednesday, April 9
- Exclusive Participation: Only delegates elected at polling units can vote in ward elections
This electoral process will ultimately determine leadership positions including chairperson, deputy chairperson, secretary, treasurer, and organizing secretary at various levels of the party structure.
The grassroots elections represent a significant step in ODM’s preparations for future political engagements and internal leadership restructuring.
