South Africa Crowned World’s Friendliest Country in Global Study

Despite facing challenges such as crime and gender-based violence, South Africa has secured the top spot as the friendliest country in the world, according to a recent scientific study.

How South Africa Earned the Title

UK-based financial service provider Remitly conducted research across 27 nations, analyzing five key personality traits: openness, conscientiousness, agreeableness, extraversion, and neuroticism.

Over 3,000 participants worldwide completed the “agreeableness” section of the Big 5 Personality Test, which measures how welcoming and friendly a population is to visitors. South Africa scored an impressive 34.63 out of 40 in agreeableness, securing the top position.

What Makes South Africans So Friendly?

Remitly’s analysis highlighted several factors contributing to South Africa’s top ranking:

  • Warm and welcoming residents who make visitors feel at ease
  • Common friendly greetings from strangers in public
  • Sociable nature with good humor and frequent joking
  • Eleven official languages facilitating communication with diverse cultures

The South African government celebrated the achievement on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “From Ubuntu to everyday kindness, South Africans are just lekker like that.”
