South Africa Rejects U.S. Refugee Status for Afrikaners, Calls Decision Misinformed

South African Cabinet Rejects US Decision to Grant Refugee Status to Afrikaners

Government Denies Claims of Persecution Against White Farmers

The South African Cabinet has strongly criticized the United States’ decision to grant refugee status to a group of Afrikaner South Africans, calling it “misinformed.” The government argues these individuals don’t meet the legal definition of refugees under the 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol.

This response comes after 49 Afrikaners recently left South Africa for the US, claiming to be victims of “genocide” and seeking refugee protection. Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni stated during a post-Cabinet briefing that allegations of discrimination are “unfounded” and don’t meet the persecution threshold required by domestic and international refugee law.

Crime Statistics Dispute Genocide Claims

“South African Police Service statistics on farm-related crimes do not support allegations of violent crime or genocide targeted at farmers generally or any race group,” Ntshavheni emphasized. The Cabinet maintains its position that the US government’s narrative is incorrect but remains open to constructive dialogue on the matter.

President Ramaphosa’s Diplomatic Visit to Côte d’Ivoire

In other developments, Cabinet welcomed President Cyril Ramaphosa’s working visit to Côte d’Ivoire, which coincided with the 12th Africa CEO Forum on May 12-13, 2025. The visit aimed to strengthen bilateral relations between the two nations.

During the trip, Ramaphosa met with Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara to discuss mutual interests. Both leaders committed to enhancing bilateral ties and increasing trade between their countries.

South African Troops Withdraw from DRC

Cabinet also received an update on the phased withdrawal of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) from eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This follows the termination of the Southern African Development Community Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC) mandate.

The decision came after extensive diplomatic efforts by the African Union, SADC, and East African Community to facilitate a negotiated settlement in Congo. “Cabinet commends the commitment shown by the SANDF members who served with honour, pride, and commitment to promote the AU Agenda of silencing the guns under very challenging circumstances,” Ntshavheni stated.
