South Africa’s Lanzerac Estate Introduces World’s First Premium Water Tasting Experience
In a bold move that challenges conventional luxury experiences, a historic Stellenbosch wine estate is now offering what might be the world’s most exclusive water tasting. The Library at Lanzerac has become home to The Fine Water Company’s pioneering tasting room, where visitors pay R295 per person for a 45-minute session exploring the subtle complexities of premium waters from around the globe.
The Water Sommelier Revolution
Founded in 2021 by Nico Pieterse, one of only two certified water sommeliers in South Africa, The Fine Water Company brings an unexpected level of sophistication to what many consider the most basic of beverages. Pieterse, an experienced entrepreneur from Franschhoek, began his journey with a tasting room at Chefs Warehouse at Maison before moving to his current prestigious location in November 2024.
The company recently acknowledged water expert Dr. Michael Mascha for his instrumental role in launching this groundbreaking tasting concept at Lanzerac—an estate with its own rich history dating back to 1692. The property, previously owned by former Steinhoff CEO Markus Jooste before being seized by the South African Reserve Bank, now hosts what might be the most unconventional tasting experience in the Cape Winelands.
What Exactly Is Water Tasting?
Could water truly have distinct flavors worth analyzing? According to water sommeliers, absolutely. The tasting sessions mirror wine evaluations, with participants sipping, evaluating, and comparing different waters while learning about their origins and mineral compositions.
“Water tastings are more than an event—they’re an invitation to rethink water’s role in our lives,” explains The Fine Water Company. “By celebrating its complexity, these experiences elevate water from an everyday necessity to a luxurious, sensory delight.”
The Tasting Experience Unveiled
During the 45-minute session, participants sample a diverse range of waters that might include mineral-rich spring water, soft glacial melt, purified and distilled varieties, and even urban tap water for comparison. The selection features rare and exotic waters sourced from locations as varied as the Alps, Iceland, and volcanic springs.
Guests are guided through a sensory exploration where they learn to observe, describe, and evaluate each water’s appearance, aroma, taste, and mouthfeel. Much like wine tasting, participants sip small amounts and let the water linger on the tongue to fully appreciate its profile, cleansing their palate between samples with neutral water or mild snacks.
The Science Behind the Sip
The water sommelier explains how factors like mineral content, source location, and filtration methods shape each water’s unique characteristics. Each water tells a geological story through its distinct taste and texture, revealing hidden flavors that most people never notice.
“This experience reveals how water reflects its journey through the earth,” notes the company. “Whether you’re a connoisseur, health enthusiast, or simply curious, a water tasting offers a fresh perspective on this vital resource.”
