SSPDF Accused of Launching Air Strike on SPLA-IO Cantonment Site in Yei

Conflict Escalates in Central Equatoria State

JUBA — The South Sudan Peoples’ Defense Forces (SSPDF) has been accused of carrying out an aerial attack on a Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO) cantonment site in Yei River County, Central Equatoria State, according to Col. Lam Paual Gabriel, SPLA-IO spokesman.

Details of the Attack

In an official statement released on Tuesday, Col. Lam reported that the attack occurred around 09:00 on Saturday, targeting the Kendila cantonment site and the Mongoya assembly area in Morobo County.

“The SSPDF continued with its war campaign this morning at around 0900 hours by attacking the Kendila cantonment site and the Mongoya assembly area in Morobo County,” Lam stated.

Impact on Civilians

While the airstrike reportedly caused no military casualties, it triggered widespread panic among civilians, leading to mass displacement toward Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“The SPLA-IO condemns this act of terrorism by the SSPDF and calls on the international community to hold them responsible for starting this war,” Lam added.

Eyewitness Accounts

Local sources reported seeing Ugandan People’s Defense Force (UPDF) Mi-24 Hind attack helicopters crossing from Uganda to strike SPLA-IO positions in Mongoya and Kendila.

“Civilians in the area are evacuating, with many attempting to cross into Uganda for safety,” one witness reported. “Residents express exhaustion from the ongoing conflict and call for peace to rebuild their country.”

This incident follows another alleged airstrike six days prior at the Wunaliet cantonment site west of Juba.
