Tillabéry Citizens React to Niger’s Refoundation Charter Promulgation

Mixed Reactions Emerge After Historic National Refoundation Decisions

Tillabéry, Niger – Following the official launch of Niger’s Refoundation Charter implementation on March 26, 2025, citizens in the Tillabéry region have expressed diverse opinions about the sweeping political changes. The charter stems from resolutions adopted during February’s National Foundations conference in Niamey.

Civil Society Weighs In on Political Transformations

Civil society leader Amoukou Abdoulaye described this as “a decisive phase for the country,” welcoming the dissolution of political parties as “a decision we’ve long awaited.” He emphasized that this move signals a departure from traditional politics, stating: “We must understand we’re no longer in a political era.”

While praising the release of unjustly detained civil and military prisoners as “a step toward tolerance and forgiveness,” Abdoulaye stressed the need for comprehensive justice: “We cannot build this country without addressing past wrongs. Justice must be done for those who mismanaged the nation.”

Calls for Economic Justice and Security Improvements

Abdoulaye called for thorough investigations into financial crimes, arguing: “The new authorities must recover stolen public funds. Without this, the population’s wounds won’t heal.” Regarding security, he urged collective action: “Development requires peace and cohesion. Everyone must contribute to this relentless struggle.”

Fellow activist Abdoulaye Issaka Mamoudou viewed the changes as “a major turning point,” particularly endorsing prisoner releases: “We’re starting anew – everyone must be in the same boat for stability.” He emphasized economic priorities: “We must invest in agriculture and industry to reduce imports. Strict implementation of these recommendations is crucial for national confidence.”

Education Sector Demands Attention

Education advisor Daouda Haoussayzé Abdoulkadri welcomed the reforms but highlighted concerns: “We demand justice for financial crimes and political violence. These cases must set examples for future generations.” He particularly emphasized educational reforms: “The teaching sector must regain its prestige. Marginalizing education jeopardizes all development – we’ll lack competent professionals in every field.”

Security Concerns and National Unity

Teacher Almoustapha Abdoulaye expressed solidarity with the transitional government while calling for enhanced security measures: “Our army needs proper equipment to combat those attacking their own nation.” He concluded with a hopeful note: “We pray for divine guidance for our leaders in making right decisions for peace in Tillabéry and all Niger.”
