Togo Launches New Program in Dapaong to Strengthen Community Resilience
Empowering Youth and Women in Northern Togo
The Gens des Médias de la région des Savanes (GEMESA) association has launched a transformative community resilience program in Dapaong, Savanes region, on May 15. This initiative specifically targets economic empowerment for young people and rural women in Northern Togo.
Substantial Funding and Project Scope
With significant backing of over CFA272 million from Luxembourg’s Action Solidarité Tiers Monde (ASTM), the program will run from 2025 to 2029. The project focuses on five key prefectures: Cinkassé, Kpendjal-Ouest, Tône, Tandjouaré, and Oti.
Comprehensive Support for Local Communities
The initiative provides crucial support to various groups including:
- Agricultural cooperatives
- School press clubs
- Cultural and economic activity groups
By fostering rural entrepreneurship and social cohesion, the program aims to integrate youth and women into local decision-making processes.
Addressing Marginalization Through Economic Inclusion
Lalle Tani, GEMESA’s director, emphasized the program’s significance: “Young people and women are often marginalized in development decisions,” despite their vital role in socio-economic transformation. The project strategically leverages their potential in income generation and cultural leadership.
Complementing National Development Efforts
This initiative aligns with the Togolese government’s Emergency Programme for the Savannah Region (PURS), reinforcing resilience among vulnerable populations facing security and economic challenges in Northern Togo.
