The office of US President Donald Trump has reportedly initiated plans to convert office spaces in Pretoria into refugee processing centers for thousands of white Afrikaners seeking asylum in the United States.

This development follows Trump’s February statement that Afrikaners could qualify for refugee status in the U.S. due to being “victims of unjust racial discrimination.” The announcement came after South Africa’s implementation of the controversial Expropriation Bill.

According to The New York Times, the program dubbed “Mission South Africa” aims to facilitate Afrikaner immigration to the US as refugees. The phased initiative has already reviewed over 8,200 resettlement applications and identified 100 potential candidates for refugee status, as reported by IOL.

Growing Interest Among Afrikaners

The South African Chamber of Commerce in the US (Saccusa) revealed that 67,042 people have registered on their website seeking to take advantage of Trump’s offer. The administration has reportedly provided security escorts for officials conducting refugee interviews in South Africa.

Canadian immigration consultant Nicholas Avramis cautioned that Afrikaners considering refugee status abroad should carefully weigh the long-term implications of such a decision.

Implementation Timeline

US officials in South Africa are expected to present comprehensive strategies by mid-April to ensure effective implementation of the refugee resettlement program. A memo from the US Embassy in Pretoria to the State Department outlined plans for “dignified resettlement of eligible Afrikaner applicants.”
