UTM Unveils Economic Rescue Plan: Mining, Jobs, and Industrialization to Revive Malawi

Ambitious Plan to Transform Malawi’s Economy

As Malawi prepares for the crucial 2025 elections, the United Transformation Movement (UTM) has positioned itself as a transformative force with a comprehensive economic recovery plan. Party officials describe their manifesto as a “mission to rescue the nation” from years of stagnation.

Key Economic Reforms Proposed by UTM

Mineral Resource Development: The party plans to operationalize 10 new mines nationwide to tap into Malawi’s underutilized mineral wealth, creating thousands of jobs and boosting government revenue.

Nationwide Industrialization: UTM proposes establishing industries in every major city to decentralize economic growth, reduce import dependency, and stimulate regional development.

Economic Stabilization: The plan includes measures to combat inflation, stabilize the kwacha, and restore investor confidence. “We cannot build schools, hospitals, or roads on a broken economy,” a party representative emphasized.

Social and Governance Reforms

Agricultural Revolution: The manifesto promises modern farming techniques, improved market access, and sustainable food security solutions to address chronic hunger.

Workforce Empowerment: UTM commits to better wages, benefits, and working conditions, recognizing workforce morale as critical to national development.

Anti-Corruption Measures: The party pledges to eliminate nepotism, tribalism, and regionalism in public appointments, instituting merit-based hiring practices.

Decentralization and Sectoral Development

The plan includes devolving power to local governments and District Assemblies to ensure grassroots participation in development decisions. Additionally, UTM aims to:

  • Combat youth unemployment through strategic investments
  • Develop Malawi’s tourism potential with infrastructure upgrades
  • Implement sustainable policies to eradicate hunger

“This isn’t empty rhetoric,” UTM officials stated, contrasting their approach with previous administrations. “This is action. This is vision. This is UTM.”

The party’s slogan, “UTM, yagwira nsewu” (UTM has taken the road), reflects their confidence in this comprehensive reform agenda as Malawi approaches a pivotal election year.
