Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba has defended the growing ‘Ruto must go’ chants across Kenya, describing them as legitimate expressions of public frustration with the government’s economic policies.

In a statement on Saturday, the UDA legislator and ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua argued these protests reflect genuine concerns about:

  • Social Housing Authority (SHA) challenges
  • University funding crises
  • Low school capitation
  • Delayed pension payments
  • Unreliable Inua Jamii transfers
  • Mandatory payroll deductions
  • High electricity costs
  • Persistent unemployment

Democratic Rights vs Security Concerns

Wamuchomba emphasized that such expressions fall within Kenyans’ constitutional rights: “Article 1 gives citizens power to decide their governance. We must listen without victimization.”

Her comments follow Chief of Defence Forces Charles Kahariri’s Thursday address at the National Intelligence and Research University, where he cautioned:

“While defending the constitutionally elected government, we insist any ‘Must Go’ chants must follow legal processes to prevent anarchy.”

Political Reactions

The debate has sparked divergent views:

Support for Kahariri

Saboti MP Caleb Amisi defended the military’s stance: “The CDF simply emphasized constitutional processes. The army remains a neutral institution.”

Criticism from Senators

Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah warned against military involvement in politics: “Security agencies must maintain neutrality. African history shows the dangers of politicized armed forces.”
