Zamfara Governor Pledges Full Support for New Federal University of Medical Sciences in Tsafe
In a significant development for healthcare education in northern Nigeria, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has committed his administration’s unwavering support to the newly established Federal University of Medical Sciences and Health Technology in Tsafe.
Strengthening Healthcare Through Education
The pledge came during a courtesy visit by the university’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Ibrahim Yakasai, and his management team to the Government House in Gusau on Monday. The meeting marked the first official engagement between the state government and the university’s leadership since the institution’s establishment.
Governor Lawal emphasized the strategic importance of the new university, noting its alignment with his administration’s dual priorities. “My administration declared two states of emergency: one in education and another in health,” the governor stated. “This new university combines both areas; although it is an educational institution, it focuses on medical sciences. Health is obviously a crucial sector that we value and are eager to revive.”
Substantial Investment and Infrastructure
The governor revealed that his administration has already committed over 8 billion naira to the institution and controls approximately four hectares of land dedicated to its development. This substantial investment underscores the state government’s serious commitment to making the university a success story.
“As a responsible government, we will do everything possible to ensure you have what you need for a smooth start,” Lawal assured the university management. “I believe in forming a united team to enable a seamless transition, especially since some students are already enrolled. We need to approach this thoughtfully and execute the process correctly.”
Vice Chancellor’s Vote of Confidence
Professor Yakasai expressed his appreciation for the governor’s commitment to revitalizing Zamfara’s education and healthcare sectors. The Vice Chancellor highlighted the unique position the university holds in Nigeria’s educational landscape.
“This university is unique as the first and only institution dedicated to health sciences and medical technology,” Yakasai explained. “One of Nigeria’s major challenges is the lack of access to sophisticated medical equipment, and this university is here to fill that gap.”
The Vice Chancellor, who recently inspected the campus facilities, reported significant progress in renovation work and expressed confidence in the governor’s support. “I have visited the campus and seen the renovation work that has been completed. We currently face no major challenges. I am confident that you will provide us with 100% support,” he stated.
A Collaborative Future for Medical Education
Governor Lawal concluded the meeting with a firm commitment to ongoing collaboration. “Be assured that my government is fully committed to supporting the university,” he affirmed. “We will continue to seek additional funding, and everyone is united in this effort, standing firmly behind you.”
The establishment of the Federal University of Medical Sciences and Health Technology represents a strategic investment in addressing Nigeria’s healthcare challenges through specialized education. With state support now firmly secured, the institution appears poised to begin its critical mission of training the next generation of healthcare professionals and medical technologists.
