Drone Strikes Cause Complete Power Outage in Sudan’s Port Sudan
Major Infrastructure Targeted in Escalating Conflict
Port Sudan – A series of drone strikes has crippled critical infrastructure in Sudan’s strategic coastal city of Port Sudan, causing a complete power outage and disrupting essential services across the region.
Key Targets Hit in Coordinated Attacks
The attacks, which began on Sunday, have targeted:
- The city’s main power station (causing complete blackout)
- Port Sudan International Airport (civilian section)
- A major army base in the city center
- A fuel depot near the southern port
- A hotel near the presidential palace
Witnesses reported thick black smoke rising over the city at dawn, with journalist Cristina Karrer describing the scene as “quite apocalyptic” to the BBC’s Newsday programme.
Humanitarian Impact
The strikes have severely impacted civilian life:
- Water and health services disrupted
- All flights cancelled at the international airport
- UN temporarily suspended aid flights (though ground operations continue)
Farhan Haq, UN deputy spokesperson, confirmed: None of our offices, premises or warehouses have been impacted, and we continue to carry out our regular operations.
Military Blames Paramilitary Forces
Sudan’s military has accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of carrying out the drone attacks, though the RSF has not yet commented. Government spokesman Khaled Al-Aiser vowed the military was guarding critical infrastructure to the fullest extent possible.
Regional Concerns Grow
The African Union warned the attacks represent a dangerous escalation
in Sudan’s two-year civil war, threatening civilian lives and regional stability. Previously considered a safe haven, Port Sudan had avoided direct conflict until this week.
The conflict has already:
- Killed thousands
- Displaced millions
- Created the world’s worst humanitarian crisis
Both the army and RSF face allegations of war crimes as fighting continues to escalate.
