Peace Advocate Calls for Diplomatic Resolution

JUBA — The Executive Director of the South Sudan Center for Peace and Advocacy (CPA), Ter Manyang Gatwech, has issued a strong appeal to President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar to pursue dialogue rather than military solutions to their differences.

In a Tuesday statement, the prominent human rights activist emphasized: “The relative peace we currently have in the country is better than nothing. South Sudan cannot afford to return to full-scale war.”

International Concerns Grow

Manyang warned that based on his discussions with international partners: “South Sudan will be seen as a forgotten crisis if the leaders do not manage their internal affairs wisely.” He stressed that both leaders bear direct responsibility for maintaining peace, given their extensive experience with Sudanese and South Sudanese affairs.

“There is no military solution anywhere in the world; the only option for conflict resolution is dialogue. It is time for South Sudanese leaders to prioritize the interests of the country over their personal interests.”

A Plea for Lasting Peace

The peace advocate painted a poignant picture of South Sudan’s generational conflict: “Some of us were born into war, attended school during the war, and got married amidst the conflict. Now our children are still experiencing war. This is not the country we desire.”

He outlined the nation’s aspirations, calling for: “a nation where there is the rule of law, human rights, good governance, democracy, and enough food on the table for its citizens.”

Call for International Intervention

Manyang urged the international community, including the African Union, UNMISS, and other partners, to intervene in the current political situation to prevent further escalation.

The appeal comes amid growing concerns about stability in South Sudan as the country continues to navigate complex political challenges following its independence in 2011.
