U.S. Senior Advisor Massad Boulos Honors Victims of the Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda
Kigali, Rwanda – The U.S. Senior Advisor for Africa, Mr. Massad Boulos, along with his delegation, visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial to pay tribute to the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The visit underscores the ongoing international recognition of Rwanda’s tragic history and its path to recovery.
Understanding Rwanda’s History and Resilience
During a guided tour of the memorial’s exhibition, Boulos and his team gained deeper insights into the historical context, causes, and devastating consequences of the genocide. The delegation also learned about Rwanda’s remarkable journey of reconciliation, reconstruction, and nation-building in the decades since.
Diplomatic Discussions Amid Regional Tensions
The visit comes amid heightened tensions in the Great Lakes region, particularly the ongoing conflict between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the AFC/M23 rebel group. Prior to his visit to the memorial, Boulos held a meeting with Rwandan President Paul Kagame.
The discussions between President Kagame and the U.S. advisor focused on strengthening partnerships to foster long-term peace in the region. Additionally, they explored opportunities to expand U.S. investments in Rwanda and neighboring countries, particularly in strategic economic sectors.
Commemorating 31 Years Since the Genocide
Rwanda is currently marking 31 years since the genocide, in which over one million Tutsi were systematically killed by government-backed extremists. The Kigali Genocide Memorial serves as a poignant reminder of this dark chapter while also highlighting the nation’s resilience and unity in the aftermath.
