Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has reignited his political feud with President William Ruto, vowing to make him Kenya’s first one-term president in history.

Gachagua’s Bold Declaration

In a fiery statement on Sunday, April 13, 2025, Gachagua framed his 2027 political ambitions as a crusade against what he called “kakistocracy” – government by the least qualified or most unscrupulous citizens.

Growing Political Tensions

The former deputy president’s remarks come as anti-Ruto sentiment grows nationwide, with “Ruto must go” becoming a rallying cry among opposition groups.

Ruto’s Response

President Ruto dismissed the criticism during a funeral in Siaya County, comparing the current opposition to past political movements:

“There was ‘Moi must go,’ then another ‘must go,’ and yet another… this is just a normal song, there is no problem,” Ruto stated in a mix of Swahili and English.

The president emphasized his focus on national development priorities including education reform, infrastructure improvement, and proper implementation of devolution.

Background of the Feud

The public rift between Ruto and his former deputy intensified after Gachagua’s impeachment in October 2024, marking one of Kenya’s most dramatic political fallouts in recent years.
