Youth Empowerment for Peaceful Elections
The National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) in Chiradzulu District is mobilizing Malawian youth to become peace ambassadors ahead of the crucial September 16, 2025 general elections.
Combating Election Violence
Chimwemwe Saiti, NICE District Programmes Officer, revealed that politicians often exploit youth for electoral violence. “We want to ensure youths are agents of peace, not perpetrators of violence,” Saiti emphasized.
Since February 2025, NICE has conducted specialized training programs equipping young Malawians with conflict resolution skills and election peacekeeping strategies. These initiatives aim to create a generation of politically aware youth committed to democratic values.
Building Democratic Foundations
NICE’s comprehensive approach includes:
- Voter education workshops
- Peacebuilding seminars
- Civic engagement training
“By working together, we can promote a peaceful and credible electoral process,” Saiti stated, highlighting the organization’s commitment to Malawi’s democratic stability.
The Importance of Peaceful Elections
Peaceful elections are fundamental to Malawi’s democratic progress. When citizens vote without fear, it strengthens:
- Public trust in electoral systems
- Government legitimacy
- National stability
NICE’s voter education programs extend beyond election periods, fostering long-term civic participation and democratic values among Malawian youth.
A Collaborative Approach
The organization works with multiple stakeholders to create an environment conducive to free and fair elections. Their efforts focus on:
- Youth empowerment
- Community engagement
- Political accountability
As Malawi prepares for the 2025 polls, NICE’s initiatives represent a critical investment in the nation’s democratic future.
