APC Shifting From Progressivism to Monarchy, Says Former Party Chieftain

Salihu Lukman Warns of Democratic Erosion in Ruling Party

Former National Vice Chairman (Northwest) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Salihu Lukman, has raised alarm over what he describes as the party’s gradual abandonment of its progressive ideals in favor of a monarchical system.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s political program on Friday, the former party leader expressed deep concerns about the current state of internal democracy within the APC.

End of Internal Contests?

Lukman lamented that the party appears to have abandoned internal contests, opting instead for automatic adoptions of candidates. “The APC has moved from a party envisioned to be progressive to almost a monarchy,” he stated.

“As it is now, the APC mantra is that there will be no internal contest in 2027. The President is adopted. All their governors are adopted. Legislators are also adopted,” Lukman revealed during the televised interview.

Coalition Against Status Quo

The former APC chieftain disclosed that discussions have been ongoing for over a year to establish a viable political platform capable of challenging the current political establishment.

“There is nothing stopping the coalition from coming to fruition,” Lukman asserted. “Even when governors claimed they weren’t part of the coalition, we responded clearly. Some have already moved to the APC or are on their way.”

He further explained: “We have the PDP bloc in the coalition and nothing is stopping us. We’re going through a painstaking process and will soon clarify all details regarding how we’ll contest the 2027 elections and the coalition’s leadership.”
