APR Rwanda and Petro de Luanda Advance to BAL 2025 Semifinals in Pretoria
Defending champions and rising contenders gear up for BAL Semifinal battles on July 11 in South Africa
Pretoria, South Africa – June 10, 2025
APR’s Historic BAL Breakthrough: A Rwandan Statement
APR’s victory was one of the most complete performances of the 2025 BAL season so far. With a relentless offense and disciplined defense, the Rwandan side controlled the game from start to finish. Leading the charge was Nuni Omot, who dropped 21 points with surgical precision, including multiple three-pointers that swung momentum early in the contest.
Supporting Omot’s explosive play was Aliou Diarra, who delivered a standout double-double performance, racking up 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. The team’s overall shooting accuracy was remarkable — hitting 50% from beyond the arc and a blistering 62.5% from the field.
“This victory means a lot to our team and to Rwandan basketball. We came prepared, executed our game plan, and stayed focused,” Diarra said postgame. “But we’re not done yet — our eyes are on the title.”
For Rivers Hoopers, it was a tough outing despite strong efforts from Madut Akec, who led the team with 21 points, and Raphael Putney, who added 12. The Nigerian champions struggled to keep pace with APR’s transition game and three-point barrage.
Petro de Luanda Marches On: Defending Champions Stay on Course
In the second quarterfinal, Petro de Luanda proved why they are defending BAL champions. The Angolan powerhouse showcased veteran composure and firepower to outlast US Monastir, a former champion and perennial playoff contender.
Kendrick Ray led all scorers with 20 points, demonstrating his value on both ends of the floor. Yanick Moreira added 15 points, while the team capitalized on its deep bench and strong interior defense to keep Monastir from gaining any real momentum.
US Monastir fought valiantly, with Patrick Hardy Jr. scoring 17 points and Firas Lahyani contributing 15. However, the Tunisian side fell short in critical stretches, unable to string together enough stops to slow down Petro’s offensive rhythm.
“We have great respect for US Monastir, but we are focused on defending our title. Every game is a battle, and we’re ready for the next challenge,” said Petro head coach Jose Neto.

Basketball Africa League: A Rising Force in Global Hoops
Launched in partnership between the NBA and FIBA, the Basketball Africa League has quickly grown into one of the most important professional leagues on the continent. The BAL not only promotes high-level competition but also serves as a platform for African talent to shine on the global stage.
Each year, 12 teams from across Africa compete in the BAL season, which combines regular-season conferences and a playoff bracket to determine the champion. The 2025 season has been especially competitive, showcasing the evolution of African basketball and drawing attention from international scouts, media, and fans.
In addition to elite basketball, the league runs the BAL Elevate program to give young athletes exposure, and partners with local organizations to promote education, health, and youth development through the game.
Looking Ahead: Eyes on the Finals
With just four teams remaining, the intensity of the 2025 BAL season is about to reach its peak. APR is seeking its first title in a historic run for Rwandan basketball, while Petro de Luanda is looking to repeat and cement its dynasty. Al Ahli Tripoli and Al Ittihad will aim to crash the final with their own strong squads and passionate fan bases.
As anticipation builds toward the semifinals and finals, one thing is clear — the Basketball Africa League is not just a competition, but a celebration of the continent’s rising talent, sportsmanship, and unity through basketball.
