Key Consultation Meeting Held in Grand-Popo
On April 17-18, 2025, the ECOWAS Representation to Benin, in collaboration with Benin’s Ministry of Economy and Finance and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, organized a high-level consultation meeting at the Millennium Popo Beach Hotel in Grand-Popo. The event brought together key stakeholders to review ECOWAS-funded initiatives in the country.
Stakeholders and Meeting Objectives
The gathering included ECOWAS Parliament members from Benin, sectoral ministries, ECOWAS representatives from Togo, specialized agencies, and implementing NGOs. The primary goal was to assess the portfolio of ECOWAS projects and programs in Benin, focusing on coordination and impact.
Meeting Structure and Key Outcomes
The two-day event featured:
- Opening and closing ceremonies
- Presentations of completed and ongoing projects
- Discussions on implementation challenges
- Recommendations for improved coordination
Notable speakers included Ambassador Amadou Diongue (ECOWAS Resident Representative), Hon. Nassirou Bako Arifari (ECOWAS Parliament), and Mr. Faustin Guidi (Head of ECOWAS National Office).
Major Findings and Recommendations
Participants mapped over 50 ECOWAS-supported projects and identified key challenges in monitoring and coordination. Recommendations included:
- Appointing ministry focal points for ECOWAS projects
- Creating a national directory of ECOWAS initiatives
- Establishing a UEMOA-inspired monitoring framework
- Developing a comprehensive communication strategy
A Model for Regional Cooperation
This initiative represents a strategic advancement for Benin and a potential model for other ECOWAS member states. The participatory approach aims to strengthen governance, transparency, and the impact of regional projects while aligning them with national priorities.
