IGP Christian Tetteh Yohonu Assesses Security Situation in Bawku After Violent Clashes

Bawku, Upper East Region – Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohonu led a high-level delegation to Bawku on Thursday to assess the security situation following violent clashes between local youth and law enforcement officers.
Security Delegation Gathers Firsthand Insights
The delegation included senior officers from operations, investigations, and intelligence units. Their mission was to evaluate the current security conditions and coordinate response efforts.
Calm Restored After Joint Security Operation
According to a police statement issued by Assistant Commissioner of Police Mrs. Grace Akrofi-Ansah, Director of Public Affairs, calm was restored in Bawku on April 9, 2025, through the combined efforts of the Ghana Police Service and Ghana Armed Forces.
Casualties and Property Damage
The clashes resulted in one fatality, identified as Fuseini Iddrisu. Five others sustained gunshot injuries, including one police officer and one immigration officer, all currently receiving medical treatment.
The violence also caused significant property damage, including:
- Two police vehicles destroyed
- A rented police accommodation in Binduri damaged
- Several officers’ private residences vandalized
Enhanced Security Measures Implemented
Security has been intensified across Bawku and surrounding communities, with ongoing joint police-military patrols to maintain order.
IGP’s Compassionate Mission
During his visit, the IGP plans to:
- Console the family of the deceased
- Visit injured victims in hospital
- Support officers who suffered property losses
Police Assurance to the Public
The Ghana Police Service has pledged continued collaboration with the military, traditional leaders, and community stakeholders to maintain peace and security in Bawku.
