Lagos Revives Fanti Carnival to Celebrate Afro-Brazilian Heritage
Lagos, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to cultural preservation and community revitalization with the revival of the historic Fanti Carnival, set to take place on April 20.
A Celebration of Resilience and Cultural Rebirth
Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, emphasized that the carnival is more than just a vibrant display of colors and sounds. “It is a heritage that tells the story of return, resilience, and rich cultural rebirth,” she stated during a press conference.
The Fanti Carnival traces its roots to the late 19th century when formerly enslaved Africans, many of Yoruba descent, returned from Brazil and other parts of the Americas. These returnees established the Brazilian quarters of Lagos Island, creating a unique fusion of Afro-Brazilian culture expressed through samba rhythms, elaborate costumes, and Catholic influences.
Reviving a Cultural Legacy
While the carnival once thrived as a major cultural event, it experienced decline due to urbanization and reduced participation. However, collaborative efforts are now breathing new life into the celebration, making it relevant for tourism development, youth engagement, and cultural preservation.
Nigeria-Brazil Cultural Ties Strengthened
Mr. Manuel Lacerda Santos, Consul General of Brazil in Lagos, highlighted the deep-rooted connections between both nations. “Brazil is home to the largest population of people of African descent outside Africa,” he noted, pointing to the enduring influence of Nigerian heritage in Afro-Brazilian culture.
Mr. Oluremi Da-Costa, General-Secretary of the Brazilian Descendants Association, added that initiatives like the Afro-Brazilian Cultural Centre (established in 2021) help preserve these historical ties beyond the carnival.
Event Logistics and Safety Measures
The carnival will take place at the Remembrance Arcade of Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), with the parade starting from Kings College through designated routes. Lagos State agencies including LASAMBUS, LASTMA, and the Safety Commission will ensure a smooth and secure event.
