Lagos State Delivers 9,970 Housing Units in Six Years, Targets More by 2026
The Lagos State Government has successfully delivered 9,970 housing units across the state over the past six years, marking significant progress in its housing development initiatives.
Housing Milestones Announced at Ministerial Briefing
The announcement was made during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held at Alausa, Ikeja, as part of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second-term anniversary celebrations.
Commissioner for Housing, Mr. Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, revealed that the government has commissioned and handed over 18 housing estates in strategic locations including:
- Sangotedo
- Igbogbo
- Epe
- Odo-Onosa Ayandelu
- Badagry
- Igando
Future Housing Projects in Pipeline
According to Akinderu-Fatai:
- 4,052 units currently under construction
- 2,224 units in planning and design stages
These projects are scheduled for completion between late 2025 and early 2026.
Innovative Funding Models
The commissioner outlined the diverse funding approaches being utilized:
- Direct state allocations
- Joint ventures with private developers
- Public-private partnerships
The Rent-To-Own scheme has proven particularly successful, with:
- Over 20,000 beneficiaries
- 212 participants who have completed payments and gained full ownership
Commitment to Quality Housing
Akinderu-Fatai emphasized the government’s focus on delivering quality, livable homes with proper infrastructure and amenities. Housing remains a key component of the Sanwo-Olu administration’s THEMES+ Agenda, which covers:

- Entertainment
- Security
Addressing Housing Challenges
The commissioner acknowledged current challenges including:
- Rising construction costs
- Inflation impacts
- Foreign exchange volatility
The state is countering these through local sourcing and innovative financing solutions.
New Rent Payment System
A major upcoming initiative is the introduction of monthly and quarterly rent payments, specifically designed to assist low-income earners. The flexible payment structure aims to:
- Reduce financial stress
- Eliminate lump-sum payment burdens
- Improve housing accessibility
The government is currently engaging stakeholders including landlords and developers to address implementation challenges before piloting the program in selected areas.
