Naval Chief Advocates Spiritual Intervention in Fight Against Insecurity
Emmanuel Ogalla Calls for Holistic Approach to Security Challenges
Emmanuel Ogalla, Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), has emphasized the critical role of spiritual solutions in addressing Nigeria’s escalating security challenges. Speaking at the commissioning of newly constructed worship centers at Admiralty Estate, Navy Town, Asokoro, Abuja, Ogalla highlighted that military strategies alone may not be sufficient to combat insurgency, terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping.
Whole-of-Society Approach Needed
The event, part of activities marking the Nigerian Navy’s 69th anniversary, demonstrated the Navy’s commitment to the holistic well-being of its personnel. Ogalla stressed that Nigeria’s security crisis has evolved into complex dimensions, necessitating a comprehensive approach that integrates both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies.
“We recognize the challenges that we are facing these days… These are challenges that require a whole-of-society approach,” Ogalla stated.
He further explained, “While we look for military solutions, we also believe that spiritual solutions are part of what we need to surmount the challenges. The places of worship are key in shaping the minds and characters not only of our personnel but also of other Nigerians.”
New Worship Centers to Boost Morale
The naval chief urged religious leaders, chaplains, and imams to maximize the use of the newly commissioned facilities, emphasizing their potential to shape character and instill moral discipline. He reiterated the Navy’s focus on enhancing morale and mental resilience among officers and ratings.
Before these centers were built, naval personnel in Abuja had to rely on temporary locations like the Mogadishu Cantonment for religious gatherings. The new facilities now provide dedicated spaces for spiritual development within the Navy community.
Leadership Applauds Development
Oluseyi Oladipo, Commander of the Naval Unit in Abuja, praised the initiative, noting that the centers would significantly improve religious activities. Richmond Diala, Director of Chaplaincy for the Roman Catholic Church, also expressed gratitude to the CNS for his dedication to completing the project.
This development underscores the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to addressing security challenges through both operational and spiritual means.
