Government Takes Action to Support Displaced Persons

The government of South Sudan’s Northern Bahr El Ghazal State has pledged to facilitate the safe return of more than 1,000 individuals displaced by the ongoing conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023.

The persistent violence has led to a significant influx of returnees and refugees into South Sudan, with Aweil and surrounding areas bearing the brunt of this humanitarian crisis.

State-Led Transportation Initiative

Tong Kuot Tong, spokesperson for the Aweil Association based in Abyei, confirmed that the state government has taken decisive steps to address the situation. A delegation led by Dominic Kang, Minister of Physical Infrastructure, and the Chairperson of the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC), visited Amiet, where returnees were found sheltering under trees in dire conditions.

To ensure their safe return, the government deployed 14 vehicles to transport over 1,000 returnees to their respective communities across Northern Bahr El Ghazal.

“We are delighted to announce that our people have been transported back home,” Tong stated. “These individuals hail from various parts of our state, and the 14 vehicles have successfully delivered them to their destinations.”

Humanitarian Support and Reintegration Challenges

Tong noted that unlike previous efforts, where humanitarian partners played a leading role, the state government independently managed this transportation initiative. However, he emphasized that partners will step in to provide essential support—such as food security, healthcare, and shelter—once the returnees are settled.

The spokesperson stressed the importance of sustained community and institutional support for successful reintegration. Many returnees face severe challenges, including lost livelihoods, limited access to education, and inadequate housing.

Ongoing Crisis and Collaborative Efforts

Since the conflict erupted in Sudan, Northern Bahr El Ghazal has faced increasing pressure to accommodate returnees and refugees. The state government, alongside humanitarian organizations, is working to address both immediate and long-term needs—ranging from food and medical care to education, vocational training, and sustainable livelihood programs.

While the government’s efforts highlight its commitment to alleviating the crisis, continued cooperation with national authorities and international partners remains crucial for ensuring successful reintegration and regional development.
