NSA Calls for Proactive Strategies to Counter Extremist Threats in Nigeria

Nigeria’s National Security Adviser Urges Dynamic Counterterrorism Approach
The National Security Adviser (NSA), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, has emphasized the need for dynamic and proactive strategies to combat the growing threat of extremist groups in Nigeria. Speaking at the Pre-Review Workshop for the Policy Framework and National Action Plan for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism, Ribadu highlighted the evolving nature of terrorist threats.
Addressing the Evolving Threat Landscape
Represented by his Senior Special Assistant, Hajiya Idayat Hassan, Ribadu noted that Nigeria faces devastating consequences from violent extremism, including loss of lives and community destruction. “The fight against violent extremism demands constant vigilance as extremist groups continue to adapt their tactics,” he stated.
The NSA stressed the importance of:
- Enhancing community resilience programs
- Countering online radicalization
- Improving rehabilitation and reintegration initiatives
- Strengthening inter-agency coordination
Whole-of-Society Approach
Ribadu commended the inclusive approach involving government agencies, civil society, academia, and international partners. “We must empower communities to resist radicalization while addressing root causes of extremism,” he added.
International Support and Funding
EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot, announced a €300 million support package for regions most affected by extremism, focusing on:
- Education and skills development
- Healthcare access
- Economic opportunities for vulnerable groups
- Transboundary water management in the Lake Chad Basin
Maj.-Gen. Adamu Laka, National Coordinator of NCTC, emphasized the need for adaptive strategies: “Our responses must remain dynamic to counter emerging challenges effectively.”
The workshop, organized by NCTC with international partners, aims to refine Nigeria’s counterterrorism framework through comprehensive stakeholder engagement.
