SPLM-IO Denounces Bombardment of Civilians in Nasir

Government Accused of Human Rights Violations
RUMBEK — Lakes State Deputy Governor and Chairman of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in Opposition (SPLM-IO) Dr. Isaiah Akol Mathiang has strongly condemned the targeted aerial bombardment of civilians in Nasir, Upper Nile State, along with what he describes as the “unlawful detention” of SPLM-IO members.
In an exclusive interview with Sudan Post, Dr. Akol characterized these actions as serious human rights violations and breaches of existing peace agreements by the South Sudanese government in Upper Nile and Jonglei States.
Condemnation of Military Actions
“We condemn in the strongest possible terms the aerial bombardment of civilians in Nasir, Ulang, and Longechuk counties of Upper Nile State and Akobo County of Jonglei State by the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) and the use of chemical weapons,” Akol stated emphatically.
The SPLM-IO leader described these attacks as a flagrant violation of international law and a complete disregard for human life. He particularly criticized the recent removal of Upper Nile State Governor James Odhok Oyay and his replacement by SSPDF commander Lt. Gen. James Koang Chuol as a direct breach of the 2018 peace agreement.
Political Detentions and Civilian Protection
Dr. Akol further denounced what he called the “arbitrary and unlawful detention” of senior SPLM/A-IO officials in Juba and restrictions on their movement both within and outside South Sudan.
“The government has failed in its fundamental duty to protect civilians,” Akol asserted. “This failure has forced communities to organize self-defense groups, commonly known as the white army, to safeguard themselves and their resources.”
He emphasized the distinction between these civilian defense groups and government-backed militias: “Unlike proxy militias like Gelweng, Tit-Beny, and Agwelek that receive government support, the Nuer armed youth are ordinary citizens operating independently without formal military structure or training.”
Call for UPDF Withdrawal
The SPLM-IO leader condemned the presence of Ugandan forces in South Sudan, stating: “The UPDF intervention violates the 2017 Cessation of Hostilities Agreement, the 2018 Revitalized Agreement, and the UN Security Council Arms Embargo. We demand their immediate withdrawal.”
The Lakes State SPLM/A-IO chapter has called for the unconditional release of all detained members and officials, maintaining that these actions undermine the fragile peace process in South Sudan.
This developing situation continues to draw international attention as humanitarian organizations monitor the impact on civilian populations in the affected regions.
