Sudan Severs Diplomatic Ties With UAE Amid Civil War Accusations

The decision comes after three consecutive days of attacks on Port Sudan, a city previously considered safe from the conflict. Sudan’s Defense Minister Yassin Ibrahim accused the UAE of violating Sudanese sovereignty by allegedly using the RSF as its “proxy.” The UAE has consistently denied providing any financial, military, or political support to the paramilitary group.
Humanitarian Crisis Deepens as Conflict Enters Third Year
The two-year civil war has created what international observers describe as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with thousands killed and millions displaced from their homes.
As part of the diplomatic rupture, Sudan will withdraw its ambassador from the UAE and close all diplomatic missions in the Gulf state. This move follows recent drone strikes targeting Port Sudan’s international airport, a major power station, and a hotel – attacks the Sudanese army attributes to the RSF.
International Reactions and Legal Developments
Both the UK and US have previously called on external nations to cease support for warring factions in Sudan, specifically mentioning the UAE. However, in a significant legal development, the International Court of Justice in The Hague dismissed Sudan’s case accusing the UAE of complicity in genocide.
Reem Ketait, UAE’s deputy assistant minister for political affairs, welcomed the court’s “clear and decisive” ruling, urging the international community to focus on ending the conflict and delivering humanitarian aid.
Human rights organizations have accused both the Sudanese army and RSF of committing war crimes throughout the conflict.
