Tinubu Mocks Opposition Defectors as Desperate Sailors Fleeing a Sinking Ship

Tinubu Says Opposition Defectors Are ‘Bailing from a Sinking Ship’

President’s Remarks at APC National Summit

President Bola Tinubu has described politicians defecting from opposition parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as “bailing from a sinking ship.” The president made this statement on Thursday during the APC’s national summit in Abuja.

Tinubu emphasized that the APC is currently driving Nigeria’s aspirations, stating: “Before I skip: I just need to tell those ones saying a one-party system is no good that one party is ruling and driving the aspirations of Nigerians.”

Defenders of Democracy or Opportunists?

The president defended the wave of defections, arguing: “Where do they stand? You don’t blame people bailing out of a sinking ship when they have no life jacket. I am glad of what we have, and I am expecting more to come; that is the game. We are in a constitutional democracy.”

He further clarified that “the freedom of movement and freedom of association are not criminally punishable,” welcoming new members to the progressive fold.

Recent High-Profile Defections

Tinubu’s comments come amid a surge of opposition politicians joining the APC. Most notably, on April 23, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and numerous Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members in the state defected to the ruling party.

The president’s analogy of a sinking ship without life jackets suggests he views opposition parties as failing political platforms, making defections to the APC an inevitable survival strategy for politicians.
