UNOWAS Special Representative Concludes Key Visit to The Gambia
Reaffirming Support for Peace and Democracy
Dakar, 08 May 2025 – The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Leonardo Santos Simão, has concluded a three-day diplomatic visit to The Gambia. The mission underscores the UN’s commitment to supporting The Gambia’s efforts in consolidating peace and democratic governance.
High-Level Engagements
During his visit, Mr. Simão was received by H.E. President Adama Barrow. Discussions centered on The Gambia’s ongoing constitutional reform process, which Mr. Simão praised as a crucial step toward strengthening democratic transition and national reconciliation. He emphasized the importance of inclusivity and national ownership to ensure broad public acceptance.
Meeting Key Stakeholders
The Special Representative held high-level meetings with Mamadou Tangara, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Hussein Thomasi, Solicitor General at the Ministry of Justice. He also engaged with Fabakary Tombong Jatta, Speaker of the National Assembly, and Emmanuel D. Joof, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
Further discussions included political parties, civil society representatives, West African ambassadors, ECOWAS officials, and UN Country Team members, reinforcing multilateral cooperation for sustainable development.
Call for Constructive Dialogue
Mr. Simão reiterated the UN’s dedication to supporting The Gambia’s democratic reforms. He urged all stakeholders to foster constructive dialogue in constitutional and governance processes, vital for the nation’s stability and progress.
