Government-Backed Elections to Usher in New Leadership
Lusaka, Zambia – Zambia Athletics is set to hold crucial elections on April 12, 2025, as confirmed by Sports Minister Elvis Nkandu during a high-level stakeholders meeting. The elections, supported by both the government and the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), aim to establish new leadership for the country’s athletics administration.
Key Decisions from Stakeholders Meeting
The meeting, convened by Hon. Elvis C. Nkandu, MP, Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, addressed the cancellation of previous elections by the National Sports Council of Zambia (NSCZ). Attended by former ZA Executive Committee members, aspiring candidates, and senior government officials, the gathering resulted in several important resolutions:

- Government support for delegate transport and accommodation
- ECZ supervision to ensure transparent elections
- Full disclosure of Electoral College to all candidates
- NSCZ collaboration with ZA Secretariat for smooth preparations
Minister Calls for Unity in Athletics Administration
Hon. Nkandu emphasized the importance of unity within Zambia Athletics, urging members to resolve disputes internally rather than through media channels. “The government’s priority remains the development of athletics in Zambia,” stated the Minister, while encouraging the association to reintegrate expelled members for stronger cohesion.
The meeting was attended by key officials including Permanent Secretaries Mr. Kangwa Chileshe (Youth and Sport) and Mr. Fumba Chama (Arts), along with NSCZ CEO Mr. Sombwa Musunsa.
