TAM Addresses Malawi Fuel Shortage: Causes and Solutions
The Transporters Association of Malawi (TAM) has identified key factors behind the ongoing fuel shortage in Malawi, assuring citizens that solutions are being implemented to restore normal supply.
Logistical Challenges Behind the Crisis
TAM Chairperson Frank Banda explained that while the situation is concerning, it remains manageable. “The fuel crisis stems from logistical challenges, none of which are insurmountable,” Banda stated in an interview.
Supply Chain Disruptions
A major contributor was a dispute between a National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA) supplier and the Tanzania Revenue Authority. “The supplier faced suspension from loading operations until two weeks ago, creating temporary supply gaps,” Banda clarified, adding that the issue has since been resolved.
Port Congestion Issues
Banda also cited severe congestion at Tanzania’s Dar es Salaam Port, a critical hub serving multiple African nations including Malawi, DRC, and Zambia. “Delays at this regional port affected all users, but operations normalized last Thursday,” he reported.
Current Recovery Efforts
TAM has mobilized significant resources to address the shortage:
- 50 fuel trucks have already arrived in Malawi
- Another 50 departed Tanzania on Wednesday
- 150 additional trucks dispatched to Dar es Salaam
- 20 trucks from Mozambique’s Beira Port have arrived after forex-related delays
Future Stabilization Plans
Looking ahead, Banda outlined TAM’s strategy:
“We’re deploying 80 trucks for Petroleum Importers Limited and 100 more for NOCMA on Thursday. These measures should significantly ease the fuel supply situation in Malawi,” he assured.
Public Reassurance
Banda concluded with a message of reassurance: “We urge Malawians to remain calm. The situation is under control, and fuel supplies will stabilize soon.”
